It is with deepest sympathy that I pass onto you the passing of a great Aviation Logistician. MgSgt James (Mi) Payne, USMC Ret on April 21st. Jim was a long time member of the squadron, long before we became Don Davis Squadron. Jim has helped in many capacities with us and other organizations as can be read in his obituary below. He will be greatly missed.

James William (Jim) Payne Obituary
On April 21, 2024, Master Sergeant James William (Jim) Payne received his final deployment. He was born and raised in Cartersville, GA, and made homes in Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.
Jim comes from a long line of military service with six family members serving in the Corps, and one in the Navy. A career U. S. Marine, he was assigned to the Air Wing of the Corps. He served two tours in Vietnam along with multiple tours overseas and stateside. During his career, he served in multiple roles in his squadron. Not only was he a perfectionist, there was no one who was more dedicated to the Corps than him.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, he went to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corporation as a logistics representative.
After his second retirement, he continued serving the military community by volunteering in the Marine Corp League Honor Guard, Toys for Tots, and the Disabled American Veterans Association in The Villages, Florida.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family, and neighbors who became family.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Syble Kemp Payne; daughter, Brenda Payne; parents, Dewey and Lydia Payne; sister, Grace; and brothers, J.R., H.B., and Marvin.
He is survived by his sons, David Payne (Tammy) of Winterville, and Larry Payne (Christine) of Gray, Tennessee; grandchildren, Paige DiPirro of Charlottesville, Virginia, Maddison McClellan (Connor) of Jonesborough, Tennessee, and Garrett Payne of Greenville, North Carolina; brothers, Paul Payne of Blue Ridge, Georgia, Thomas Payne of Ellijay, Georgia, and Hugh Payne of Newport, North Carolina; and sister, Evelyn Weatherington of Carrollton, Georgia.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, at 2 PM in Homestead Memorial Gardens with full military honors. The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 6-8 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
