ByStaff Report - April 16, 2019

The Villages Marine Corps League Detachment 1267, the Colonel Phillip C. Delong Detachment, has been awarding leadership awards for the past 12 years. Leadership Scholarship Chairman Fred Geier on Monday presented this year’s six leadership scholarships.

L-R: Jr. Vice Commandant Bill Ward (Granddaughter) Carlie Liko, Sabrina Mead, Allen Chan-Pong, Quartermaster Jim Coleman (granddaughter) Christian Coleman, Rebecca Clark, Fred Geier

This year’s award winners included four Villages High School seniors and two Marine Corps League family members.

The award recipients are:

• Allen Chan-Pong of The Villages High School

• Christian Coleman of Lewisburg, Pa.

• Rebecca Clark of The Villages High School

• Sabrina Mead of The Villages High School

• Carlie Liko of Smyrna, Tenn.

• Graylin Skates of The Villages High School

Each received a $1,000 scholarship.

“The Villages Marine Corps League is proud to offer this scholarship to The Villages High School and Marine Corps League Detachment family members. This award is different from others, it’s about leadership; and there’s one thing Marines appreciate and that’s a good leader,” Geier said.

“It gives our Villages Marine Corps League Detachment the opportunity to select the recipient on merits other than just scholastic average. We are looking for that ‘diamond in the rough’ who has demonstrated his or her potential leadership qualities to become a great leader in the future.”

Including this year’s recipients, The Villages Marine Corps League has now awarded over $60,750 total to the past 64 award recipients.

The Villages Marine Corps League meets every third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at Bacall Recreation Center. For additional information about the organization, contact Geier at 352-751-2591.
